Benefits of the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique can benefit almost anybody with the interest to pursue it, at almost any age. It can be used preventatively or in response to an existing problem. It has proved especially useful for:
Reducing Stress
and enhancing emotional stability, mental clarity, poise and confidence.
Alleviating Pain & Improving Functioning
where symptoms are caused or aggravated by postural problems, tension, overreaction, breathing difficulties, and other types of "misuse".
Examples include chronic back, neck and shoulder pain and stiffness, sciatica, frozen shoulder, repetitive strain injury, TM joint disorder, vocal disorders, osteoarthritis, asthma, anxiety states, tension headaches, and long-term rehabilitation after stroke or injury (following treatment of the acute condition).
Patients with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and some other disabling diseases also report functional improvements.
Enhancing Performance
and preventing physical problems that can result from
performance. For example, AT is popular with musicians, singers, actors, public
speakers; and in sports, martial arts, yoga, Pilates, horse riding, and other
disciplines.

Relief for Chronic Back Pain: A recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that lessons in the Alexander Technique have long term benefits for patients with chronic back pain. One year on patients who received 24 AT lessons had an average of 3 days of pain per month, compared to 21 days of pain for those under normal GP care. On average, they also had 42% fewer activities limited by back pain. Six AT lessons followed by GP prescribed aerobic exercise was about 70% as beneficial as a series of 24 lessons alone. AT students also became more satisfied over time and felt they could manage their pain better. |
